Swine flu has dominated the headlines over the last few months with a growing number of cases and controversy over treatments and strategy.  It seems that although the current outbreak in the main only produces mild symptoms, a second or even third wave may be more virulent. Its impact on business life may increase with more staff absences and there may be even changes in the public’s attitude to gatherings and events for fear of infection.

Insurance coverage for businesses at the moment has little impact.  If an employee has to cancel a business trip abroad because of Swine Flu, then the costs which cannot be recovered should be met under an Annual Business Travel Insurance Policy. This should also cover the costs of sending a replacement employee if necessary. If the disease is contracted whilst abroad then medical expenses and other extra costs should be covered. Insurers are aware of the time delays and difficulties of getting doctors confirmation of inability to travel and most are flexible in their requirements.  Of course, in every case, the trip would have to be arranged prior to contracting the illness for cover to apply. If you do have directors or employees going abroad, even infrequently, on business, you should contact us if you do not already have an annual policy.

Some employers have cover on staff against sickness and once again insurance would operate as normal with insurers being more flexible on proof of illness.

However there is little cover on any loss of revenue suffered by businesses because of the pandemic. Cover is automatically provided in some cases or can be arranged if premises are closed or events cancelled by authorities on health grounds.  This may be available for the food, drink, hospitality, entertainment and event industries.  However, if the outbreak becomes more serious then insurers would be less prepared to offer cover to new enquirers.  No cover is available for loss of revenue just because of staff shortages or the public staying at home.

With the festive season a lingering memory, it is time to turn our thoughts to planning for 2009 and beyond, including business continuity. Last year was certainly challenging for many businesses, and those that escaped interruptions should learn from the experience of others.
